Apple’s 45-hour number is useful precisely because it is narrow. It is an “up to” video-playback result, not a prediction for a day of 5G, maps, camera capture, games, notifications and AI features. The real story isn’t that one headline number settles battery life. It is that Apple has made the regional hardware difference visible enough that buyers should stop treating every iPhone 18 Pro rating as interchangeable.

Why This Matters Now
The Numbers: Three Ratings, Not One Battery Verdict
Apple’s US technical sheet lists three different measures. The 18 Pro is rated for up to 24 hours of typical use, 36 hours of video playback and 33 hours of streamed video playback. The Pro Max is listed at 30, 45 and 40 hours respectively. The streaming gap is 3 hours for Pro and 5 hours for Pro Max. That is evidence that the rating categories are not synonyms.[2]

The uncomfortable truth is that these are Apple’s stated results under its defined test conditions. They do not tell us the display brightness, radio conditions, codec, app mix, thermal state or background activity a particular owner will create. Apple’s own support documentation makes the broader point: battery life varies with use and settings.[8]
That does not make the ratings empty. They provide an Apple-defined category for comparing closely related models when the category and market match. It does make the casual conversion, “45 hours equals my real-world life,” indefensible.
The Region: Why Germany Shows 34 and 43
Germany’s Apple specification page lists up to 23 hours of typical use, 34 hours of video playback and 31 hours streamed for iPhone 18 Pro; the Max is 29, 43 and 38. Those figures are 2 hours below the corresponding US video and streaming ratings.[3][5]
Apple’s US launch announcement supplies the material distinction. It says eSIM-only 18 Pro models use the space formerly occupied by a physical SIM for a larger battery and adds two hours of video playback. Germany’s specification explicitly lists Dual SIM with Nano-SIM and eSIM for its regional model.[1][3]

This is a hardware-and-market distinction, not proof that German software drains batteries faster. It also means a US 45-hour claim should not be translated into a German buying promise. Read the local technical page for the device you can actually buy.
The Upgrade Comparison: Only Match the Test and Market
Apple says the US 18 Pro Max’s 45-hour figure is six more hours than the US iPhone 17 Pro Max. That math matches Apple’s earlier eSIM-only iPhone 17 Pro Max rating of 39 hours.[4][6]
That is the clean comparison: maximum video playback, eSIM-only market, Pro Max to Pro Max. It is not a six-hour guarantee for every workload, and it does not establish a 6-hour improvement for a physical-SIM regional handset. Apple also credits the eSIM-only 17 Pro Max’s extra battery space for two additional video-playback hours, which underlines why the SIM configuration belongs in the comparison.[6]
Apple says its next-generation vapor chamber has three times the 17 Pro surface area and enables up to 40% better sustained performance. That is an Apple performance claim about a thermal system; it is not a battery-life multiplier and does not demonstrate a battery result in a demanding game or local AI workflow.[1]
Charging: The Adapter Is Part of the Claim
The US specification says iPhone 18 Pro can reach up to 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable or higher adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply and a USB-C cable. It separately says up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 35W or higher adapter and MagSafe Charger. Both accessory paths are sold separately.[2]
Those are conditions, not a general statement that every USB-C brick delivers the same result. Apple says charging slows after about 80% to reduce stress and heat, and can pause in extreme temperatures. A slow-charger notice means the attached charger cannot deliver optimal power.[7]
Apple’s press release also says five minutes of wired charging on the US Pro Max can provide around seven hours of video playback. Treat that as a narrowly defined vendor claim tied to its test, not as a field estimate for a five-minute top-up before a flight.[1]
The Buying Rule: Buy the Margin You Can Verify
If endurance is a priority, compare the local Pro and Pro Max specification pages against a real constraint: long offline viewing, frequent travel or a workday where charging is genuinely awkward. Do not assume that the video rating measures all mixed use. Screen brightness, weak signal, recording, navigation, games and background work can make personal results differ from Apple’s stated test category.
Apple’s own new “up to 30 hours of use per charge” statement for the US Pro Max is based on a battery-usage model that uses real-world data. It is a different Apple metric from video playback, not permission to average the two figures or assume a 45-hour ordinary-use outcome.[1]
What We Have Not Tested
